Tennessee Reach Elite Eight Again, Ament Unmentioned

Tennessee secured a spot in the Elite Eight for the third consecutive time, defeating Iowa State 76-62. This victory at the United Center sets up a clash with Michigan for a place in the Final Four. The Volunteers, led by Coach Rick Barnes, are aiming for their first Final Four appearance.

Volunteers Dominate Iowa State

The Tennessee team features 11 newcomers, forming a new team. Coach Rick Barnes believed this squad had the potential for significant achievements if the pieces fit together. Forward Jaylen Carey, a transfer from Vanderbilt, recalled Barnes stating that the team could win the national championship.

Tennessee’s front line, including Felix Okpara and Carey, proved too much for Iowa State. Carey made a gesture toward the crowd, after Iowa State called a timeout with 12:57 remaining. Tennessee dominated in total rebounds (43-22), offensive rebounds (16-8) and points in the paint (42-30).

Key Performances on the Court

Carey and Okpara both recorded double-doubles. Four other Volunteers players had at least four rebounds each. Barnes noted the improvement and development of Felix Okpara. Iowa State forward Milan Momcilovic said that they were just fighting for every rebound.

Looking Ahead to Michigan

Tennessee feels better equipped this year to contend with Michigan’s massive front line. Before Barnes’ arrival, Tennessee had made only one Elite Eight appearance, in 2010. Barnes is aiming for his first Final Four since 2003, when he was with Texas.

Athletic director Danny White said that Rick is turning Tennessee basketball into a blue blood. This is from four straight Sweet 16s and three straight Elite Eights.

Iowa State felt the absence of All-America forward Joshua Jefferson, who was unable to play due to a sprained left ankle. Jefferson said he wasn’t close to returning and still experienced pain, and didn’t think he would have been ready for Sunday if Iowa State had advanced.
