WNBA legend Sue Bird has apologised for a fashion faux pas at a preseason game between the Seattle Storm and the Portland Fire.
Bird, considered one of the greatest players in WNBA history, was present to watch the Storm defeat the Fire, 91-81. The retired star, who was drafted first overall by the Storm in 2002 and went on to become a four-time WNBA champion and 13-time All-Star, made an unintentional error with her outfit choice.
Bird’s Colourful Mistake
Bird mistakenly wore the colours of the Storm’s opponent, Portland. She sported a bright red cardigan, which gave the impression she was supporting Portland.
The 45-year-old took to her Instagram Story to issue an apology for the blunder.
“My bad on the red,” she wrote, adding a hands-on-face emoji.
Breakup Announcement
The outfit mishap comes after what has been described as a tough couple of weeks for Bird. Earlier this month, she and her longtime girlfriend, Megan Rapinoe, announced their separation.
Bird and Rapinoe, who had been together for several years and were engaged, shared the news of their breakup via an Instagram post.
“There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news,” they wrote. “After a lot of thought, we’ve made the decision to separate as a couple.
“This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made together, with so much love, respect, and care for each other.”
A Shared History
The couple emphasised that the decision to separate was mutual.
“We’ve shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we’ll always carry with us,” Bird and Rapinoe wrote. “We are so grateful for this incredible community that has held us up, welcomed us in, and supported us exactly as we are.”
Bird’s appearance at the game comes after announcing her split from Rapinoe.
