Finalissima 2026: Spain vs Argentina Match Cancelled

The 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina, which was scheduled to take place in Qatar, has been cancelled. UEFA confirmed the cancellation, citing the current political situation in the region as the reason.

Qatar Unsuitable Due to Middle East Conflict

The match between UEFA EURO 2024 winners Spain and CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 champions Argentina was set for March 27 in Doha. The game would have been the first time Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi faced each other on the pitch.

However, the U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran and the subsequent fallout have made Qatar an unsuitable host. UEFA, CONMEBOL and the local organizing committee considered alternative dates and venues, including Madrid and Buenos Aires, but could not agree on a solution.

“After much discussion between UEFA and the organising authorities in Qatar, it is announced today that due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima cannot be played as hoped in Qatar,” UEFA stated.

Argentina Rejects Alternative Venues

UEFA explored other options, but each was rejected by the Argentinian Football Association. One option was to stage the match at the Bernabeu in Madrid on the original date, offering a 50:50 split of supporters. Argentina refused this proposal.

Another option involved a two-legged tie. The first leg would be at the Bernabeu on March 27, and the second in Buenos Aires during an international window before UEFA EURO and Copa America 2028. This option, again offering a 50:50 supporter split for the Madrid match, was also rejected.

UEFA sought a commitment from Argentina that the game could proceed on March 27 or the alternative date of March 30 if a neutral venue in Europe could be found. This proposal was also rejected.

Alternative Dates Proved Unworkable

Argentina suggested playing the game after the World Cup, but Spain had no available dates. Contrary to the original plan for the match to take place on March 27, Argentina declared its availability to play exclusively on March 31, which was unworkable.

Finalissima History and Significance

  • This would have been the fourth edition of the Finalissima.
  • It is only the second time this century the trophy has been competed for.
  • Argentina are the current holders, having beaten Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022.

France won the inaugural edition, known as the Artemio Franchi Cup, against Uruguay in 1985. Argentina also lifted the trophy in 1993 with a penalty shootout victory over Denmark.

The game was set to feature a match-up between Barcelona’s Yamal and Inter Miami CF’s Messi for the first time.

The cancelled match was set to be the fourth edition of the Finalissima.
