Simeone Updates on Alvarez Fitness Ahead of Arsenal Clash

Diego Simeone has played down suggestions that Atletico Madrid’s decision to switch hotels in London was due to superstition. The Colchoneros boss offered a practical explanation before the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Arsenal.

Simeone Dismisses Superstition Claims

Simeone addressed rumours surrounding Atletico Madrid’s change of hotels in London. The team’s logistics were questioned after a heavy 4-0 defeat in London back in October, sparking rumours that the Argentine manager was looking to change his luck. Simeone dismissed these claims during his pre-match press conference.

When asked if the move was a tactical change to his routine, Simeone responded, “We are better now than in October and now the hotel is cheaper.” The response drew laughs, highlighting the manager’s focus on the task at hand.

Alvarez’s Crucial Penalty and Fitness Update

Arsenal took the lead in the first leg through a Viktor Gyokeres penalty. Julian Alvarez converted a penalty 11 minutes into the second period to seal a draw for the Rojiblancos.

Simeone provided an update on the fitness of several key attackers, including Alexander Sorloth, Julian Alvarez, and Giuliano Simeone. “Yesterday they moved a bit, they are better. We hope they can train well and tomorrow morning we will decide how we start,” he said.

Focus on Performance, Not Superstition

Simeone emphasised that the outcome of the semi-final will depend on performance on the pitch, rather than off-field management. He noted the media’s attempts to find sensational storylines, stating: “What I notice is that they are always looking for some headline that is out of the ordinary for a semi-final. And simply the one who plays better and strengthens their weapons will be the one closest to winning.”

Beyond the choice of accommodation, Simeone remains focused on the match. Atletico are looking to reach their third Champions League final under his leadership, and the manager stressed the importance of emotional management. He stated that experience gives him the “peace to face a match like tomorrow’s.”

He particularly highlighted the value of Sorloth, noting: “An extremely important role, we need him very much. It was a shame he couldn’t play in the home game because of a tight hamstring. We need him whether it’s for 10 or 90 minutes.”
