Linebacker Scooby Williams, an undrafted free agent who verbally agreed to join the Minnesota Vikings, did not officially sign with the team because of an issue discovered during his physical examination.
Williams’ Initial Agreement and Scouting Report
Williams, formerly of Florida and Texas A&M, was one of 19 undrafted rookies who agreed to terms with the Vikings after last month’s draft. The Vikings, Texas A&M, and Williams himself confirmed the agreement. Williams garnered attention due to his nickname, which originated from his childhood fondness for Scooby-Doo fruit snacks; his given first name is Jeremiah. He is a 6’2″, 243-pound linebacker.
Williams recorded 11.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions over 18 games with the Aggies. He was considered among the undrafted rookies with a chance to make the Vikings’ roster. His ability to move downhill and make plays seemed a good fit for Brian Flores’ defensive scheme.
Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked Williams as the No. 26 linebacker in this draft. Brugler noted that Williams had early-round grades from NFL scouts entering the 2025 season. However, Brugler’s scouting report also mentioned that Williams missed six games last year with high ankle sprains to both ankles, following previous meniscus surgery in the offseason. Brugler wrote that “Staying off the injury report could be the greatest obstacle for his pro career.”
Physical Concerns Prevent Signing
Williams attended the combine but did not participate in athletic testing during the pre-draft process due to injury concerns. It now appears a medical issue has prevented him from officially signing with the Vikings.
The Vikings’ official website updated its story on the 19 UDFAs on May 11, stating that “Williams did not sign with the Vikings.” Some fans noticed he was not on the roster for last Friday’s rookie minicamp. Alec Lewis of The Athletic reported on X that an issue with Williams’ physical was the reason for the failed signing.
Vikings’ Roster Adjustment
The Vikings’ signing of former Kansas, South Carolina, and Pitt linebacker Bangally Kamara after rookie minicamp may be related to Williams’ situation. Minnesota’s 90-man roster currently has one open spot.
