NASCAR driver Ryan Preece has responded to Stephen A. Smith’s comments about NASCAR drivers not being athletes.
Smith’s Comments Spark Debate
Stephen A. Smith sparked controversy when he stated that NASCAR drivers are not athletes. Smith made the comments during a discussion about LeBron James’ longevity as an athlete on his SiriusXM podcast. The discussion about James led to a caller suggesting Richard Petty should be on the list of great athletes. Smith responded by saying, “Come on, man. That don’t count. You driving a car!”
Smith continued, “I’m being honest, it’s a great sport. But come on, bro. Getting behind the wheel of a car is not the same. You can be behind the wheel of a car in your 60s and 70s for crying out loud. A golfer is not an athlete. A NASCAR driver is not an athlete.”
Smith’s remarks have been met with criticism, with many questioning whether he has ever watched a NASCAR race.
Preece’s Fiery Response
Preece, who was involved in a significant crash at Daytona, has responded to Smith’s comments. Preece’s wreck at Daytona was severe enough that the speedway removed the grass from the backstretch. This change was made to try and keep cars on the ground in the future.
Asked about Stephen A. Smith at Talladega, Preece stated: “I’d love for him to go tumbling 13 times, have black eyes, and show up next week doing what you gotta do.”
Background to the Debate
Smith’s comments touched on a recurring debate about whether NASCAR drivers are athletes. He made the remarks during a debate about where LeBron James ranks as one of the greatest athletes ever in terms of longevity. Smith was dismissive of the idea that driving a car qualified someone as an athlete.
The debate began when a caller suggested Richard Petty deserved to be on the list of great athletes.
Preece’s response highlights the physical demands and risks involved in NASCAR racing.
