Butler has appointed Ronald Nored, a former player, as its new men’s basketball coach. Sources confirmed to CBS Sports that the 36-year-old Nored, an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks, reached an agreement with the university on Tuesday night.
A formal announcement is scheduled for Wednesday. Nored takes over from Thad Matta, who retired earlier this month.
Nored’s History with Butler
Nored played for Butler under Brad Stevens from 2008-12. He was the starting point guard on both Bulldogs teams that reached the national championship game in 2010 and 2011.
Butler has maintained consistency by hiring someone with strong ties to the university, a member of the Big East since 2013. Nored and Akron coach John Groce were the two finalists for the job, per sources.
Nored’s Coaching Background
Nored had previously explored head coaching positions in college. He began his coaching career with the Maine Red Claws in 2013, followed by a season with the Celtics.
He then spent a year at Northern Kentucky, before a two-year stint as the head coach of the Long Island Nets from 2016-18. Since 2018, Nored has been an NBA assistant with the Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks.
Butler’s Investment in Basketball
Butler is significantly invested in its men’s basketball programme. According to a source, the school anticipates working with at least $9 million in revenue sharing and NIL funding for the 2026-27 season.
When Nored was a player at Butler, he expressed his ambition to become a coach. His relationship with Stevens helped him begin his journey with the Maine Red Claws.
Nored will now take on the Butler job.
