The Houston Rockets are preparing to start a five-game homestand featuring what are described as five losable games.
Pelicans’ Recent Form
Despite a 22-45 record, the New Orleans Pelicans have won seven of their last ten games. These wins include victories over the Toronto Raptors, Golden State Warriors, and Philadelphia 76ers. All three losses during this stretch were on the road against good teams. The Pelicans also have a win over the Rockets from December.
This improved form has coincided with Dejounte Murray’s return to the court. In his seven games back, Murray is averaging 17.6 points, 5.4 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game. He has provided the Pelicans with another shot creator, and his defence has improved the team’s overall performance.
Pelicans’ Draft Pick Situation
The Pelicans do not own their own first-round pick due to the Derrick Queen trade. Because of this, they have no reason to tank and have a prime opportunity to assess their current roster. A strong performance over the next month could lead them to keep their roster intact and make additions to push for a playoff spot next season. If the team starts losing, they can decide whether a full or soft rebuild is the better route. Murray, Herbert Jones, and Trey Murphy III could attract suitors and potentially net at least a first-round pick each.
Rockets’ Upcoming Games
After the game against the Pelicans, the Rockets are scheduled to play the Los Angeles Lakers twice. They will also face the Atlanta Hawks and the Miami Heat (on a back-to-back) in Houston.
The Rockets then play the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night at home.
