A brave performance from rookie Kayla Reyneke helped South Africa Women level their series against New Zealand Women. The 20-year-old smashed an unbeaten 28 off nine balls, including three sixes in the final over. Her heroics proved the difference as the Proteas secured an 18-run victory.
Reyneke’s Late Hitting Proves Decisive
Reyneke’s brutal onslaught came against New Zealand superstar Sophie Devine. Devine, who recently secured a £210 000 contract with the Welsh Fire, has a T20 World Cup title and boasts over 4 000 ODI runs with 100 ODI wickets. However, Reyneke was unfazed, focusing on watching the ball and clearing the boundary.
“It was pretty sick. Batting with Wolvaardt, dream come true,” Reyneke said. “It is not the name (Devine), but the ball. Just watching the ball and clearing the boundary. Happy to get a win for the team. I’m enjoying every moment in the setup.”
Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt, who scored an unbeaten 41 off 33 balls, praised Reyneke’s power hitting. Wolvaardt noted it was lovely to see Reyneke’s performance, especially after the team lost their way after the start.
Khaka and Mlaba Star with the Ball
The Proteas’ bowling unit rediscovered its form, dismissing the White Ferns for 159. Ayabonga Khaka took 4/27 and Nonkululeko Mlaba claimed 3/27. Tazmin Brits also struck her 15th T20I half-century.
- Ayabonga Khaka: 4/27
- Nonkululeko Mlaba: 3/27
- Tazmin Brits: Half-century
Wolvaardt said it was a much better performance overall from the team, with great batting intent and execution of plans with the ball.
Proteas Confidence Boost Ahead of Series Decider
The Proteas will travel to Auckland in much better spirits for the third T20I. The series is now level after their 18-run victory.
