The return of Red Sox players from the World Baseball Classic marks the end of daily updates from Fort Myers. Wilyer Abreu’s solo shot for Team Venezuela capped off the Classic for the Red Sox contingent. Manager Alex Cora expressed his satisfaction at having everyone back in camp or en route, despite being a proponent of the WBC. He noted that there is still work to be done in preparation for the season.
Outfield Logjam Looms
The Red Sox face a challenge with their outfield, as five players compete for essentially four lineup spots. Cora had previously discussed the outfield logjam. The projected outfielders include Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Abreu, and Masataka Yoshida, all of whom participated in the WBC.
Anthony is expected to play regularly, primarily in left field, with some appearances as DH and occasional shifts to right field. Duran will rotate between left and centre field, as well as DH. Rafaela and Abreu are set to occupy centre and right field, respectively. The role of Yoshida remains less clear.
Cora stated the importance of assessing the group and devising strategies for deploying players. He welcomes the challenge, viewing the depth of talent as a positive asset. He believes the team will find solutions and perform well.
The Battle for the No. 5 Starter Spot
The competition for the No. 5 starter role involves Johan Oviedo, Connelly Early, and Payton Tolle. Early pitched five scoreless innings in a 1-0 loss to the Yankees. Tolle impressed with a scoreless four-inning relief appearance against the Braves. All three pitchers have had their moments, with Early showing the most consistency.
Adding to the competition are veterans Kutter Crawford and Patrick Sandoval. Crawford and Sandoval both missed all of last season due to injuries.
Each member of the trio has Minor League options.
With the full squad returning, the Red Sox are focused on preparing for Opening Day.
