The racing community is in mourning following the sudden death of amateur rider Sam Lee, who passed away on Friday at the age of 27.
Lee, who rode four winners under rules and many in point-to-points, is being remembered with great affection.
Tributes Paid to Lee
Laura Morgan, a licensed trainer based in Leicestershire and Lee’s former employer, described the news as “absolutely horrendous”. She remembered him as a bubbly and fun-loving character. “He was lovely and such a bubbly guy, he brightened up the room and he’d always be having a laugh and a joke – he was such fun to be around,” Morgan said.
Morgan added that Lee took pride in his job and was always immaculately dressed for racing. She also noted his love for Cheltenham, where he was a member.
The Injured Jockeys Fund and the Point-To-Point Authority released a joint statement announcing Lee’s death. They stated: “The point-to-point world is devastated to hear of the sudden death of Sam Lee.” The statement also conveyed deepest sympathies to Lee’s family and friends, acknowledging his popularity within the point-to-point scene and the shock caused by his death.
Point-to-point race meetings this weekend will observe a minute’s silence in memory of Lee.
Lee’s Career Highlights
Lee’s biggest win came on Golan Fortune in a Listed handicap hurdle at Cheltenham in November 2019.
BHA Statement
BHA chief executive Brant Dunshea said they were all shocked and upset to hear about Lee’s death. “Amateur jockeys are an integral part of our sport, its community and its rich history,” Dunshea stated.
Dunshea added that support services are available to those affected by Lee’s death and encouraged anyone needing support to reach out.
