Preston North End to Face Southampton After Draw Dims Promotion Hopes

Preston North End are preparing to welcome Southampton to Deepdale for their final-day battle. The Lilywhites are aiming to end their 11th consecutive campaign in the Championship on a high note. Southampton are preparing for the playoffs after drawing with Ipswich Town earlier in the week.

Preston’s Form and Home Struggles

Preston North End are guaranteed to compete in the second tier of English football for a 12th straight time next season due to their consistency issues. They have failed to win back-to-back Championship matches since January 4. Consecutive defeats to West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City suggested a team already on the metaphorical beach. However, Paul Heckingbottom’s men produced an excellent display at Bramall Lane last weekend.

The Lancashire outfit claimed their 15th second-tier victory of the term, winning 3-2 in Yorkshire. Centre-back Liam Lindsay bagged his first-ever brace for Preston inside the opening 20 minutes at Sheffield United. Aston Villa loanee Lewis Dobbin has found his Championship home with the Lilywhites after difficult spells at West Brom and Norwich City. He has provided 17 goal contributions across 38 appearances this term.

Preston have claimed maximum points from just one of their past six second-tier home matches (D2 L3). Saturday’s hosts winning only three of their 13 home fixtures in 2026 has caused disgruntlement among the Deepdale faithful.

Southampton’s Unbeaten Run and Playoff Outlook

Southampton are likely to feel slightly disappointed ahead of this weekend’s trip to Deepdale, despite being in the midst of a staggering 18-game unbeaten league streak (W13 D5). This is the third-longest run in the club’s history.

The Saints were pipped to the FA Cup final by Manchester City in their final-four encounter at Wembley Stadium last weekend. Three days later Tonda Eckert’s side could only manage a league draw with Southampton, ending hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Southampton know that a Championship playoff semi-final awaits them later in May. Millwall and the Tractor Boys fight for second spot on Saturday.

Key Players and Home Performance

Since losing Adam Armstrong to Wolverhampton Wanderers over the winter, the Saints have leaned heavily on the attacking abilities of Finn Azaz. The Birmingham-born forward scored against the Citizens at Wembley last weekend.

Only champions Coventry City (55) and Ipswich (47) have collected more than Southampton’s 44 home points in 2025-26. The South Coast club are enjoying an 11-match unbeaten sequence at St Mary’s Stadium.
