Europe Grapples with Unprecedented Heat
Europe, a region with typically low air-conditioning ownership rates, is experiencing increasingly intense heatwaves. Western Europe recently saw its hottest June on record, pushing temperatures above 40C (104F) in cities across Germany.
The region is now bracing for more heatwaves before the summer concludes. Steven Scholtysek, a 36-year-old German engineer, is well-acquainted with Europe’s heatwaves, having lived through sweltering summers since his childhood.
However, Scholtysek noted that this year the heat has been “especially unbearable.” Adding to his challenge, he moved into an attic apartment a few months ago, a type of dwelling notorious for overheating during summer.
“It’s not possible to live a normal life in those flats, below the roof, in summer heat,” stated Scholtysek, who resides in the town of Hamelin, north-central Germany. His personal experience reflects a wider challenge faced by many.
His search for a practical cooling solution led him to discover the PortaSplit. For Scholtysek, the appliance proved to be “a game changer,” transforming his living conditions.
His experience is one that is becoming increasingly common across Europe. This trend is a direct result of the more intense heatwaves impacting the continent.
The PortaSplit Phenomenon Takes Hold
The Midea PortaSplit has generated significant demand. Units have sold out in stores over the past few weeks, indicating the speed at which it has become a popular choice.
Such is the demand that models have even appeared on resale sites, where their prices are marked up substantially. These units are being sold at double or even triple their original retail price, which was around €750 (£639; $856).
The growing interest has led to the creation of a dedicated site, MideaFinder, which tracks the availability of these units. This widespread craze for the PortaSplit has largely focused on its unique ability to sidestep common structural constraints in European cities.
Many European cities have strict historic-preservation rules. These regulations often restrict exterior-wall modifications, such as the drilling typically required for external AC units.
The Midea PortaSplit is specifically touted as installation-free. It is also advertised as being “perfectly compatible with most European window types.”
The unit comes with a lightweight outdoor component. Users are able to perch this outdoor unit outside their windows themselves, making installation straightforward.
User Experiences Highlight a ‘Cult’ Following
Denis Yurchak, a resident of Vienna, first encountered the PortaSplit a few weeks ago. He was actively researching air-conditioners to help him manage through the ongoing heatwave.
Yurchak told the BBC that “Midea solved this problem in quite an interesting way.” This innovative approach quickly became apparent to him.
The 27-year-old swiftly realised there was “a kind of cult about Midea.” This observation stemmed from glowing online reviews and various forums dedicated to exchanging tips about air-conditioners.
Since publicly raving about his PortaSplit on X, Yurchak has been integrated into this dedicated community. He states that he now receives curious messages about the air-conditioner on a daily basis.
During the most severe periods of the heatwave, Yurchak said he “basically had it on 24/7.” This constant operation highlights its necessity for him.
Sales Surge Across Key Markets
The impact of the PortaSplit is evident in Midea’s sales performance. The company has seen its sales surge by more than 70% year-on-year in several key European countries.
This includes France, Spain, Germany, and the UK. The significant increase in sales indicates a strong market response to the product’s unique solution for cooling.
The PortaSplit’s rise reflects a growing consumer need. As Europe continues to face intense heat, adaptable cooling solutions have become increasingly vital for residents.
