Port Vale Ready for Sunderland Test in FA Cup Fifth Round

Port Vale are preparing for their FA Cup fifth-round match against Sunderland, marking their first appearance at this stage in 30 years. Memories of their 1996 victory against Everton are emblazoned around Vale Park. That 2-1 victory in a fourth-round replay, after holding the Cup holders at Goodison Park, was the last time Vale had reached this stage until their recent win over Bristol City.

Brady Eyes Memorable Performance

Head coach Jon Brady is focused on delivering a memorable performance for the fans. “It’s been 30 years since we’ve been to this stage – but it’s now about putting in a performance that can be memorable,” said Brady. “You want to put in performances they can go home talking about, and that they can be proud of.”

Brady wants to see smiles on faces and people feeling upbeat about the team. He aims to create special memories that will live long, referencing the recent win which he believes will stay in the players’ and fans’ memories. Brady also cherishes his own FA Cup memory of scoring a 40-yard “fluke” against Sheffield United while playing for Rushden & Diamonds.

Gray’s Cup Experience Boosts Valiants

Striker Andre Gray’s experience is seen as an asset for Port Vale. Gray is still proud of helping Watford to the 2019 final, despite the 6-0 defeat to Manchester City. “Winning a game at Wembley, I don’t think you can really top that,” he said. “It’s a shame it wasn’t the final. And a shame we got the best team in the world in the final.”

Gray arrived at Vale a month ago after leaving Fatih Karagumruk. His pass set up Ben Waine for the winner against Bristol City. The 34-year-old is eager to create more FA Cup memories.

Whirlwind Week for Port Vale

The win against Bristol City has created a buzz around the club. Before the match, the team had been preparing for a League One game against Peterborough, crucial in their fight to avoid relegation. Ben Waine’s goal in the 111st minute has momentarily shifted the focus away from the relegation battle and onto the FA Cup.

Gray emphasized the significance of these FA Cup occasions. “These occasions are massive,” he said. “I’ve played in cup games abroad and it’s nothing like this. For some reason when you’re abroad it’s always the usual big teams that are in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, whatever. And the atmosphere is nothing compared to here in England in the FA Cup.”

Brady’s Marathon Plans Disrupted

Brady had to adjust his schedule following the victory over Bristol City. He had planned to run the Cambridge half marathon on Sunday as preparation for the London Marathon. “That was booked in a long time ago,” he laughed. “It’s not that I didn’t think we would get through!”

Vale have sold more than 10,000 tickets for the Sunderland tie in the past few days. The attendance is expected to be high.
