Mauricio Pochettino’s future as the USMNT manager after the World Cup is uncertain, with no extension agreement in place.
Despite suggesting he might stay, his past interest in Premier League opportunities casts doubt on his long-term commitment to U.S. Soccer. He was a big hire for the tournament, but questions remain about what happens afterwards.
Potential Replacements if Pochettino Departs
If Pochettino leaves, the U.S. will need a new manager by the end of the summer. Several candidates are in contention.
B.J. Callaghan is a presumptive favourite, owing to his prior experience in the role. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola would be massive surprises, but stranger things have occurred.
B.J. Callaghan’s Previous Stint
USMNT fans remember B.J. Callaghan’s time in charge. His seven games felt like a transitional period after Gregg Berhalter’s departure.
Callaghan, previously an assistant on Berhalter’s staff, stepped in but wasn’t expected to get the job permanently. He went undefeated, winning four games and the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League.
He was the first USMNT manager since 1934 to beat Mexico in his debut fixture.
Callaghan has since impressed with Nashville SC, winning the Open Cup in 2025. His team are among the best in the East this year. If the USMNT wants to build the program with someone familiar with the setup, Callaghan is an option.
Jurgen Klopp’s Availability
Matt Crocker initially contacted Jurgen Klopp in 2024 when seeking a new manager. Klopp declined, citing his need for a break after leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season and suggesting he might not coach again.
He has since become Head of Global Soccer for the Red Bull organisation. The possibility of him managing again will always be a talking point.
It seems unlikely he would take another job in England or Germany. Spain would also be a surprise.
With rumours circulating, GOAL has considered the most likely candidates to take over from Pochettino.
