Oleksandr Usyk Granted WBA Title Defence Against Rico Verhoeven

Oleksandr Usyk has been granted permission by the WBA to defend his ‘Super’ heavyweight title against Rico Verhoeven. The fight is scheduled for 23 May. Unified champion Usyk will face former Glory kickboxing world champion Verhoeven at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

WBA Sets Conditions for Title Defence

The WBA confirmed that should Usyk emerge victorious, the bout will officially count as a successful title defence. However, the title itself will not be at stake for Verhoeven, as he is currently not ranked by the sanctioning body.

The WBA stated, “If the champion were to lose, the WBA championship committee would then review his status and determine the next course of action regarding the heavyweight championship.”

IBF’s Stance on the Usyk Fight

The IBF has also granted permission for Usyk to fight, though his belt will not be on the line for Verhoeven. The IBF said that if Usyk loses on 23 May, 2026, the IBF Heavyweight title will be declared vacant immediately.

Should Usyk win, the IBF said it would order a mandatory challenge within 180 days.

Usyk’s Perspective on Facing Verhoeven

Usyk previously defended his decision to face Verhoeven, saying he should be able to “do what I want”, having already beaten Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois on two occasions. Usyk is yet to lose in 24 fights as a professional and has enjoyed three spells as an undisputed champion – twice at heavyweight and once at cruiserweight.

He also won Olympic gold for Ukraine at the 2012 Games in London.

Verhoeven’s Boxing Background

Verhoeven has a formidable reputation in kickboxing but has only boxed once professionally in 2014. The WBA said that Verhoeven would be eligible to enter its heavyweight rankings if he becomes the first man to defeat Usyk.

Usyk has won 15 of his 24 fights inside the distance.

The boxing schedule and results for 2026 are available to view.
