Oilers Target Jason Dickinson in Trade Talks With Blackhawks

The Edmonton Oilers are in discussions with the Chicago Blackhawks regarding a trade for centre Jason Dickinson. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, “Edmonton and Chicago are discussing another move. This one would send Jason Dickinson to the Oilers.”

Dickinson’s Contract and Playing Style

Dickinson, aged 30, has one year remaining on his contract with a $4.25 million cap hit. Mark Spector of Sportsnet reports that the Blackhawks are retaining 50% of Dickinson’s salary. Spector adds Dickinson is seen as a pure 3C – able to play against opponent’s to lines, take on toughest matchups.

Hockey analytics expert JFresh describes Dickinson as a shut-down centre. JFresh notes Dickinson works hard, has a great stick, and some physicality. He has reportedly done very well in tough deployment in Chicago this season, showing little offence except a sneaky good curl and drag wrister from range.

Details of the Proposed Trade

The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reports the Oilers have two options on the table regarding moving Andrew Mangiapane. Frank Seravalli reports the framework of what’s been discussed involves Dickinson going to the Oilers. Mangiapane and a conditional pick would go to the Blackhawks.

More details have emerged that Chicago is taking on Andrew Mangiapane and his $3.6 million per year cap hit this year and next year. The Oilers are also sending a 2027 1st pick as part of the deal, with some lottery protection around the pick.

  • To Oilers: C Jason Dickinson and another piece
  • To Blackhawks: F Andrew Mangiapane, conditional pick

Spector confirms Seravalli’s reporting that there is another piece to the deal beyond Mangiapane and Dickinson, coming to Edmonton.

Blackhawks’ Perspective

Chicago Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill described Dickinson as a great human, really even-keeled, with a great head on his shoulders, very self-accountable, and wanting to better himself. Blashill said Dickinson has been a really good piece for the team. Blashill added that he has no control over a potential trade, and neither does Dickinson.

Oilers’ Recent Moves

Earlier this week, Edmonton sent a second-round pick for Chicago d-man Connor Murphy. Chicago is taking on half of Murphy’s $4.2 million cap hit this year.

As both Dickinson and Murphy are pending UFAs, the Oilers will have some money to work with on July 1.
