Alexander Nübel, once thought to be Manuel Neuer’s long-term successor at Bayern Munich, is set to start for Germany in their international friendly against Ghana.
National team manager Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that the VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper will start against Ghana in Stuttgart. Rumours had circulated earlier in the week that Nübel could earn a starting berth.
Nagelsmann Praises Nübel’s Performances
Nagelsmann revealed, “Alex Nübel will start in goal tomorrow.” He added, “It’s a reward for the good performances he’s been showing for a long time at VfB Stuttgart. He will get his ‘home’ game in Stuttgart tomorrow.”
Nübel’s opportunity at Bayern did not materialise due to Neuer’s longevity and reluctance to split minutes. Despite this, the German international is now set to earn a rare honour for his national team.
A Chance to Shine in Stuttgart
After years of playing second fiddle to Neuer, Nübel will finally get his chance to prove his worth on the international stage. It’s a deserved reward for a keeper who has been a consistent performer in the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart.
The fact he will earn his debut at home, in Stuttgart is a fitting bonus for the goalkeeper.
