Nolan Arenado to Represent Puerto Rico in 2026 WBC

Nolan Arenado is set to represent Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. This decision comes after Arenado played for Team USA in the past. He featured in both the 2017 championship squad and the 2023 team.

Arenado’s Decision to Join Puerto Rico

Arenado stated he didn’t receive a call from Team USA. He felt he didn’t deserve a call. Yadier Molina, the manager of Puerto Rico’s WBC squad, then contacted him.

Arenado was initially hesitant due to his previous commitment to Team USA and recovery from shoulder surgery. His mother and family influenced his decision to play for Puerto Rico. His father is Cuban and his mother is Puerto Rican.

Team USA opted for Alex Bregman and Gunnar Henderson at third base. This created an opportunity for Arenado to join Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico’s WBC History and Arenado’s Role

Arenado will be the most accomplished player on Puerto Rico’s squad. The team includes part-time major leaguers such as Emmanuel Rivera and Darell Hernaiz.

Puerto Rico has a history of success in the WBC. They have advanced out of pool play in all five tournaments, alongside Team USA, Japan, and Cuba. Arenado has played in the past two championship games.

Preparation for the Season

With Carlos Correa unable to secure insurance for the tournament, Arenado will play at third base. He anticipates benefiting from full go baseball. He is preparing for his first season with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Arenado believes the WBC provides valuable energy and mental preparation for the season. He says the high stakes bring intensity and focus, similar to opening day.

“I really think it’s beneficial,” says Arenado.
