NFL Draft: Identifying Potential Gems at Wide Receiver

The Washington Commanders invested in their defence during free agency but could still add youth and talent to their offensive skill positions.

The wide receiver position is particularly thin. Terry McLaurin, at 31, hopes to rebound from an injury-plagued season. It’s uncertain who will start opposite him at WR2.

Evaluating Wide Receivers with Productivity Metrics

An analysis of wide receivers in the 2026 draft class uses advanced productivity metrics. These metrics measure receiving production per unit of playing time.

This approach aims to identify promising players who might be overlooked. It focuses on performance when opportunities arise, rather than just total playing time.

Last year’s analysis highlighted Chimere Dike, who became an All-Pro as a rookie, and Isaac TeSlaa, who impressed in his first year after being drafted earlier than expected.

Focusing on Draftable Prospects

This year’s results identified players projected to be drafted throughout the draft who might make good additions to the Commanders.

The analysis used the Pro Football Focus FBS database and narrowed the focus to players likely to be drafted or make a preseason roster as undrafted free agents.

Consideration was limited to the 672 players on the Mock Draft Database Consensus Draft Board. Consensus ranks are reasonably accurate predictors of where prospects will be drafted on the first two days of the draft.

The Importance of Yards Per Route Run

Total receiving yards are a commonly used metric, but it’s affected by playing time. A receiver with 1,000 yards might not be better than one with 500; they might have simply played more.

Receiving productivity metrics adjust for playing time differences to better reflect playing ability.

Yards Per Route Run (Y/RR) is considered the best available productivity metric for receivers, offering the most detailed correction.

The analysis identified multiple players with higher than expected productivity who are currently projected to be drafted on Day 3, where the Commanders currently have four draft picks, and many others who might be available as undrafted free agents.

Differences of around 100 places or more are likely meaningless by Round 7.
