Neymar Jr.’s hopes of playing in the 2026 World Cup are in the balance after a dramatic match and questionable substitution. The Brazilian star protested after being taken off during Santos’ 3-0 defeat to Coritiba.
Contentious Substitution Sparks Neymar Outburst
The incident occurred during Santos’ match against Coritiba. An apparent error saw Neymar substituted instead of Gonzalo Escobar. The substitution happened in the 65th minute.
Santos were already trailing 3-0. Breno scored twice, and Josué added another from the penalty spot. Cuca, Santos’ manager, reportedly wanted to substitute Escobar, who was receiving medical attention on the sidelines. However, the fourth official indicated that Neymar was to be replaced by Robinho Jr.
Neymar reacted angrily to the decision. He remonstrated with the officials. He also showed a handwritten note to television cameras, seemingly proving that Cuca wanted Escobar, number 31, to be substituted.
Neymar Awaits World Cup Selection
Carlo Ancelotti, the Brazil manager, is due to announce his squad for the 2026 World Cup. Neymar’s place in the squad is not guaranteed. The 34-year-old has acknowledged that his selection is at the discretion of Ancelotti.
“Ancelotti is the coach and he is the one who is going to define if I deserve to be there or not,” Neymar stated. He added, “My dream is to be at the World Cup. I worked for that.”
Neymar also said he would support Brazil even if he is not selected. “I want to be there, but if I am not, I am just another fan and I am going to support Brazil”. Before the match, Neymar was visibly emotional during the Brazilian national anthem.
Neymar’s Recent Injury Struggles
Neymar’s recent career has been hampered by injuries. He has only played one match for the national team since October 2023. That appearance was in a South American World Cup qualifying match. In total, he has played 128 games for Brazil.
Brazil’s World Cup Preparations
Brazil will begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Morocco. The match is scheduled for 13 June at MetLife Stadium in New York. If selected, this will be Neymar’s fourth World Cup.
Santos’ defeat leaves them near the relegation zone. The controversial substitution compounded a difficult day for Neymar.
