Mumbai Indians Favoured to Break Opening Game Jinx Against KKR

Mumbai Indians are tipped to break their opening game jinx in IPL 2026 against Kolkata Knight Riders, according to former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan.

The five-time champions haven’t won their first match of the season since 2012. They will be aiming to start strong and chase their sixth title, looking to improve on their 2025 season where they reached the playoffs, only to be defeated by the Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2.

Bumrah’s Return Boosts Mumbai’s Chances

Pathan believes Mumbai Indians have the advantage due to the return of Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian speedster, who joined the squad after a stint at the BCCI Centre for Excellence for workload management, is expected to feature in the opening fixture. Bumrah was India’s best bowler in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

“MI and KKR lost both their opening games last season. But I think things will change and Mumbai will have an upper hand this time. The biggest reason is the return of Bumrah. In the last two seasons, Bumrah was not there at the start. This time he will be there,” Pathan said on his YouTube channel.

Sharma’s Role on the Field

Pathan also emphasised the importance of having Rohit Sharma on the field this season. In 2025, Sharma featured as an impact player, only coming in to bat. Pathan believes Sharma’s experience as a former captain who has won five trophies would be vital for Mumbai.

“I feel it is very important for Rohit to be on the field. He is a lot fitter now and they will expect him to score runs again. How Virat has been scoring and stays on the field as well, it will help Rohit’s batting the more he stays involved on the field. The captain who has won five trophies, Mumbai should make use him being on the field,” he stated.

Pathan also highlighted the presence of multiple leaders and World Cup winners within the Mumbai Indians squad, suggesting that their form and confidence will be crucial for a successful campaign.

Mumbai will need to ride on that, and Pathan feels their campaign will be great.
