The New York Mets are grappling with a series of injuries, impacting their offensive lineup. Utility man Jared Young is the latest casualty, set to undergo surgery for a meniscus tear in his left knee. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for six to eight weeks, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.
Melendez Joins Lineup Amidst Injury Woes
Young’s absence compounds existing concerns, with Juan Soto still recovering from a calf strain and Jorge Polanco managing an Achilles injury. Polanco’s foot was particularly troublesome after Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, leading to him being held out of Wednesday’s lineup.
With Polanco, Young and Soto unavailable against right-hander Shohei Ohtani, the Mets made adjustments to their lineup. Brett Baty, a left-handed hitter, started at first base and batted third. MJ Melendez, who was called up to fill Young’s roster spot, started at designated hitter and batted eighth.
Melendez made an immediate impact, going 2-for-4 in Wednesday’s game. Baty, however, was hitless in the same match.
Mets Struggle During Losing Streak
The Mets have now suffered eight consecutive defeats. During this losing streak, they have only managed to score a total of 12 runs.
Soto’s Imminent Return
There is some positive news for the Mets. Juan Soto, who has been out since April 3, is progressing in his recovery. He ran for a second consecutive day on Wednesday and also participated in live at-bats against Mets minor leaguers at Citi Field.
Soto still needs to increase the intensity of his running and incorporate more agility training. Mendoza has indicated that the goal is for Soto to return to the lineup at some point during the Mets’ upcoming nine-game homestand, which begins on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins.
The Mets will be hoping Soto’s return can help turn their fortunes around as they navigate this challenging period.
