Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko Rivalry Continues in Miami

The rising rivalry between teenage tennis stars Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko is set to continue at the Miami Open. Their singles match is scheduled for Monday.

A Budding Rivalry Renewed

Andreeva and Mboko have already faced each other twice in 2026, splitting the victories. Andreeva secured a win in the Adelaide final at the start of the year. Mboko then won in the third round in Doha, 7-6 in the third set.

They’re still in their teens, and they’re already in the Top 10. There is a good chance we’ll see them play a Grand Slam final or two someday. We might even see them at No. 1 and 2 in the world. Right now, though, they’re in the process of getting to know each other better. Andreeva and Mboko have teamed up to play doubles in Indian Wells and Miami.

Form Coming Into Miami

Mboko has a record of 18-5 in 2026, while Andreeva is 14-5. Mboko has quietly built momentum since the start of the year, reaching the final in Doha and the quarter-finals in Indian Wells. Andreeva started the year strong in Australia.

Strengths and Styles

Andreeva is considered a top-tier talent, known for her defensive range and clean backhand. However, she can be volatile. Mboko shares similar strengths, with speed and powerful hitting from both sides. Mboko demonstrates fewer emotional ups and downs and is known for her comebacks.

Mboko may have an advantage on the quick hard courts in Miami, especially with a supportive crowd.

Tiafoe Looking to Capitalise

Frances Tiafoe will also be competing. Tiafoe and Jakub Mensik have had similar peaks and valleys over the past year. Last July, Tiafoe reached a season-high No. 11; a month later, Mensik rose to a career-high No. 16. From there, though, their seasons went south. Wins were hard to come by, and their rankings dropped—all the way to No. 30 in Tiafoe’s case.

Tiafoe has gone 13-6 so far in 2026, made the final at the 500 in Acapulco, and cracked the Top 20 again. Mensik, meanwhile, is 14-5, with a title in Auckland. He hit a career-high No. 12 this month.

Tiafoe credits new coach Mark Kovacs for toughening up his training. He says he got a drill sergeant in Kovacs.

Mensik is defending 1000 champion’s points from 2025. Tiafoe knows this will be his last chance to play on hard courts, in front of a home audience, until July.

Mensik won their only prior match in Davis Cup last year, 6-1, 6-4. Tiafoe seems to be enjoying the grind again.

Anisimova in Action

Americans Amanda Anisimova and Frances Tiafoe are also scheduled for high-powered matchups in Miami.

The Miami Open represents an important moment for both Tiafoe and Mensik as they look to build on their 2026 seasons.
