Minnesota United FC’s (MNUFC) six-game unbeaten run concluded with a 1-0 loss against LAFC. The match took place on a cloudy afternoon at Allianz Field. Despite dominating much of the game, the Loons couldn’t overcome an early goal.
Lineup Changes and Tactical Shifts
Head Coach Cameron Knowles made five changes to the starting lineup. The formation shifted from a 3-4-2-1 to a 3-4-1-2. Mamadou Dieng made his first start of the season alongside Kelvin Yeboah, with James Rodríguez just behind them. Wil Trapp returned to the pivot next to Nectarios Triantis, Devin Padelford filled in for Nicolás Romero, and Bongokuhle Hlongwane replaced Kyle Duncan.
LAFC also rotated their lineup, with Son Heung-Min absent. Both sides still fielded considerable talent.
Early LAFC Goal Proves Decisive
The changes in lineup and opposition strategy influenced the game from the start. Minnesota United kept possession and frequently found James. The Colombian midfielder showcased his passing range. However, it was LAFC who capitalised first.
In the ninth minute, David Martínez scored with a left-footed strike, giving LAFC the lead. LAFC, favouring counter-attacking play, then defended. Minnesota United sought a way through their compact defence.
Loons’ Offensive Efforts Fall Short
With James on the field, Minnesota United remained a threat. The switch to one ’10’ put the creative onus on James. The Black and Blue recorded 10 shots to LAFC’s three in the first half.
Minnesota United started the second half with attacking intent, pinning LAFC back. Hugo Lloris denied the most promising chances.
Coach Knowles turned to the bench.
