Michael Vaughan Slams England’s Delay in Naming New Selector

Michael Vaughan has labelled the delay in appointing a new England national selector as “ridiculous”. The former captain voiced his concerns as the first Test against New Zealand approaches.

Vaughan’s Criticism of the Selection Process

Vaughan aired his views on the Stick to Cricket podcast. He highlighted the length of time it has taken to find a replacement for Luke Wright, who stepped down in January. “It’s ridiculous how they’re announcing a selector so late,” Vaughan stated.

He added that he wanted the selector in place by 1 April to begin gathering information. “Luke Wright quit at the back end of Australia. We knew didn’t we? It’s a long time, four months, to find someone.”

ECB’s Response and Timeline

The process to appoint Wright’s successor is reportedly in its final stages, with interviews having taken place this week. The job advert was published on 18 March, with applications closing on 17 April.

Richard Gould, the England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive, led a review into the men’s national set-up following the 4-1 Ashes defeat by Australia. The review concluded shortly after the T20 World Cup, resulting in managing director Rob Key and coach Brendon McCullum remaining in their positions.

The Selector’s Role and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be involved in England’s player identification structure. Their responsibilities include being consulted on the final XI for Tests and white-ball internationals, selecting senior and Lions squads, liaising with counties, and leading the team of scouts.

Around 80 candidates submitted applications for the job.

Interim Measures

In the interim, the ECB’s network of scouts covering the domestic game has remained in place. A new county insight group, comprising county coaches and ECB figures, was also created after the Ashes review.

Former England bowlers Steven Finn and Darren Gough have been linked to the selector’s job.

England are set to name their squad for the first Test against New Zealand in two weeks’ time.
