Mark Jones, a play-by-play announcer for ESPN’s NBA and college football coverage, is leaving the network. Sources briefed on the move shared this information on Friday. Jones’s departure comes after a broadcasting run that spanned more than three decades.
Jones’s Career at ESPN
Jones began his tenure with ESPN in 1990. He rose to become the network’s No. 2 NBA play-by-player. In 2022, he called two Finals games when Mike Breen tested positive for COVID.
Over the past few years, Jones had moved down the NBA depth chart, behind Mike Breen, Dave Pasch and Ryan Ruocco.
ESPN’s Statement
ESPN released a statement on Friday. The network thanked Jones for his work. The statement did not confirm publicly that he was leaving.
“Mark has made an enduring impact at ESPN since 1990, serving as a signature voice primarily within our NBA and college football coverage and across nearly all of our platforms,” ESPN said. “We’re grateful for Mark’s countless contributions and we wish him continued success.”
Future Plans
Jones is not expected to retire. His next steps are unclear. Besides his NBA work, Jones was a consistent presence on ESPN’s college football presentation, including on the Pac-12 late-night action when the network carried those games.
The Toronto native has also worked games for the Sacramento Kings as a local play-by-player. However, the bulk of his career has been at ESPN/ABC, where he has been a regular presence.

Beyond Play-by-Play
Besides play-by-play, Jones has been a featured member on the network’s studio coverage for the Finals, Draft Lottery, All-Star game and other big events.
Jones’ final game on ESPN will be Sunday evening when the Boston Celtics face the Orlando Magic. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. ET.
