Manchester United’s interest in Sandro Tonali of Newcastle has hit a snag. The club views the Italy international as ‘really expensive’, casting doubt on whether a deal will progress.
Carrick’s Admiration and Club Concerns
Michael Carrick, now the permanent manager at Old Trafford after being promoted from interim boss, is believed to be an admirer of Tonali. Gianluca Marzio reported that Tonali is Carrick’s preferred midfield signing. Carrick will have a say in Man Utd’s summer business.
However, the club’s hierarchy, including INEOS chiefs like Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, may not always align with Carrick’s preferences. Fabrizio Romano reported that Manchester United appreciate Tonali, and his agents are based in Italy.
Despite this appreciation, Manchester United believe Tonali is ‘really expensive’, and the price is currently a problem.
Conflicting Price Tag Reports
Reports vary regarding the potential cost of acquiring Tonali. Di Marzio claimed Man Utd were ‘confident’ of signing Tonali from Newcastle for a package totalling €100m / £86m. However, The Chronicle suggests Newcastle will demand no less than €115m / £100m.
The Athletic previously noted Tonali’s salary demands would be high. Man Utd are clearly having doubts as to whether signing Tonali would be value for money.
Focus Shifts to Ederson
Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Tonali, Manchester United have reportedly entered into ‘advanced’ discussions with Atalanta for Ederson. This comes after a reported verbal offer worth €45m, which is at the bottom end of Atalanta’s valuation range (€45m-€50m).
Ederson is reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford, having signalled his willingness to join earlier in May. Romano reports that Ederson has now given Man Utd ‘total priority’ despite interest from another unnamed club.
Man Utd are also interested in Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest. TEAMtalk confirm Anderson has just agreed personal terms in principle with Manchester City.
