Man United’s De Ligt Undergoes Surgery, Ruled Out for Season

Manchester United have confirmed that Matthijs de Ligt has undergone surgery to address a back injury. The defender’s last appearance for United was against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on November 30.

Initially, it was suggested De Ligt would only miss one game, but he has been absent since. The club announced the successful operation on Friday.

De Ligt’s Determination Despite Setback

De Ligt has spoken about his commitment to returning to the pitch. “Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football,” said De Ligt.

He also expressed gratitude: “I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”

Season Over, World Cup Hopes Dashed

De Ligt had returned to individual training on grass in the last week of April. Despite this progress, United have confirmed that he will not feature for the club again this season.

The injury also ends any hopes De Ligt had of making the Netherlands squad for this summer’s World Cup. Before the injury, he’d played every minute in the 2025/26 Premier League season.

The 26-year-old had been in impressive form earlier in the campaign, earning United’s player of the month award in November.

Defensive Pairings and Other Injuries

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez have been the preferred centre-back pairing for the bulk of games since Carrick’s appointment. However, Martinez was sidelined for five games between February and March due to a calf injury.

Leny Yoro stepped into the side during Martinez’s absence. Yoro then suffered a minor hip injury last month, which ruled him out of the 1-0 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Ayden Heaven partnered Noussair Mazraoui in central defence against Chelsea that night.

Future Plans for United’s Defence

United are reportedly tracking centre-backs ahead of the summer transfer window. Strengthening other areas of the squad is the priority.

De Ligt’s injury means he will focus on recovery, with his sights set on returning to full fitness for Manchester United in the future.
