Luka Dončić’s recent performances have propelled him up the ranks in the Kia MVP chase as the NBA season enters its final month.
Dončić recently scored a season-high 60 points as the Los Angeles Lakers secured their eighth consecutive victory with a win in Miami.
Dončić’s Dominant Performance
With 15 seconds remaining and his team holding a comfortable nine-point lead, Dončić found himself at the free-throw line needing one point to reach 60 against Miami.
After missing the first attempt, the Los Angeles Lakers bench watched while LeBron James offered encouragement. Dončić then made the second shot.
The night before, Dončić scored 40 points against the Rockets in Houston. Despite a late arrival to their Miami hotel, Dončić had enough energy to complete an impressive back-to-back performance, tallying 100 points, 16 rebounds, 13 assists, and six steals over 76 minutes.
He is a brilliant offensive player, capable of leading a team to the NBA Finals. He is also a rare talent.
The Challenge for the MVP Award
Dončić has been in the Kia Race to the MVP for the past four seasons. His statistics and the success of his teams provide evidence of his value.
However, Dončić’s timing might not be ideal as he seeks his first MVP award. He is 27 years old and entering the second stage of his prime.
During his early prime, he competed with Nikola Jokić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the award. Those two players have won four MVPs together, and Gilgeous-Alexander is currently leading the MVP Ladder as he aims for back-to-back awards.
Now, Victor Wembanyama, 22, is also set to compete with Dončić for the award in the coming years.
Dončić could still win multiple MVPs. The level of competition he faces, both now and in the future, is high. Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokić are established stars, and Wembanyama is showing similar potential.
The MVP award also considers team success.
In due time, Dončić will either win at least one Kia MVP award or, if he doesn’t, it’ll probably be due to misfortune.
