Luka Dončić has been slapped with a $50,000 fine for making an “inappropriate and unprofessional gesture” at a referee. The incident occurred during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 110-97 victory over the New York Knicks, the NBA announced on Tuesday.
The Gesture That Cost Him
With 4:35 left in the third quarter on Sunday, Dončić attempted to draw a charge on Knicks forward Mohamed Diawara. However, he was instead called for a blocking foul.
While on the floor after the contact with Diawara, Dončić rubbed his fingers together, making a money gesture. He directed the gesture at official Tre Maddox.
Financial Impact and Technical Foul Count
The $50,000 fine represents approximately 0.109% of Dončić’s $46 million salary for the season.
Dončić has had frequent clashes with league officials this season. He has received 15 technical fouls in 52 games. A 16th technical foul would trigger a one-game suspension.
Lakers’ Upcoming Game
The Lakers (39-25) are scheduled to host the Minnesota Timberwolves (40-24) on Tuesday night.
