Outfielder Luis Matos, formerly of the San Francisco Giants, is heading to the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee acquired the Venezuelan player in exchange for cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, LHP Sammy Peralta has been designated for assignment.
Matos’s Journey From Prospect to Brewer
Matos was the Giants’ No. 7 prospect heading into the 2023 season. He made his major league debut in May of that year. He recorded at least 150 at-bats in each of the last three seasons.
While Matos has impressed in the minor leagues, his production is yet to fully translate to the majors. He posted an .837 OPS in Triple-A last season. Matos’ best OPS in the majors came in 2025, but his .690 mark was still below average.
Giants’ Decision and Brewer Connection
Despite a .787 OPS in 50 at-bats this spring, San Francisco DFA’ed Matos last week. Matos is still just 24.
Interestingly, Matos has performed well against his new team. He has a career 1.255 OPS in 20 at-bats against Milwaukee. As the saying goes: If you can’t stop ‘em, get ‘em.
Matos will look to make an impact with his new club. The Brewers will be hoping to unlock his potential.
