Florian Wirtz has spoken about Liverpool’s season so far, admitting that the team had aimed for more. His comments come amidst the challenge of the Champions League quarter-finals, where Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain.
Champions League Focus
Wirtz is looking forward to the Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain. The first leg will be at Parc des Princes. He described these matches as the ones he dreamt of playing when he joined Liverpool. Wirtz stated the team will try everything to perform well in both legs, aiming to progress to the next round.
“These are the games you want to play as a player and I dreamt of when I came to this club,” he said. “We try everything to do a good game tomorrow and next week also at Anfield. So yeah, these are the games you want to play as a player and for sure come through this round.”
Wirtz acknowledged the significance of the Champions League. He said Champions League games are always special. He added that the team aims to enjoy the competition, progress as far as possible, and overcome the current hurdle. Wirtz recognised the difficulty, highlighting that the best teams are competing in the Champions League, providing a valuable opportunity to assess Liverpool’s level.
Premier League Aspirations and FA Cup Exit
Wirtz conceded that Liverpool had aimed for a better season than they’ve had so far. He noted that, having won the Premier League last season, the team’s aim was to repeat that achievement this season. Despite this, Wirtz pointed out that Liverpool are still in the Champions League and are focused on qualifying for next season’s Champions League as well.
The Reds will need to move on from their FA Cup elimination at the hands of Manchester City. Wirtz stressed that there are still goals to achieve between now and the end of May.
Team Unity is Key
Wirtz underlined the importance of full energy and commitment for 90 minutes. He said that without it, Liverpool will have no chance. He also emphasised the need for the team to stick together, especially in difficult moments.
“We need tomorrow 90 minutes full energy and full commitment, otherwise we will have no chance. We need 90 minutes of being together as a team.”
Wirtz added that the team needs to maintain belief that they can win. He also highlighted the advantage of having the second game at home. Wirtz believes the team must stick together, even in bad moments.
- Champions League qualification remains a key objective.
- Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City.
- Wirtz wants the team to show full commitment.
Wirtz suggested that the team tried too much in their previous game. He felt that Liverpool were a little bit wild on the pitch. He wants to fix that for the next game.
