Leverkusen Aim for ‘Magical Night’ Against Bayern in Cup Clash

Bayer Leverkusen are aiming to turn their season around by reaching the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin. Standing in their way are Bayern Munich, who they must defeat to keep their title dream alive.

Leverkusen’s Mixed Bundesliga Form

Leverkusen’s season has been inconsistent. They currently sit sixth in the Bundesliga, making Champions League qualification uncertain. Reaching the DFB-Pokal final and potentially winning the title could salvage their season.

A few weeks ago, after a win in Dortmund, Leverkusen seemed to be back in the race for the top spots. However, their form dipped again with a 2-1 loss at home to Augsburg. Leverkusen have dropped 19 points in games against teams in the lower half of the table this season. Hjulmand said after the Augsburg game: “We were much better than the opponent.”

Hjulmand’s Hope for a Top Performance

Now, Leverkusen face Bayern Munich. Hjulmand acknowledged the challenge, stating, “It is a big challenge, but we played well a month ago in the 1-1 draw in the league. Nevertheless, we have to play a top game to have a magical night.” He also emphasised his team’s quality, calling for a “precise and sharp game”. Hjulmand is hoping for fan support and “also some luck”.

Pressure on the Leverkusen Coach

A successful result would silence Hjulmand’s critics, as he has been under pressure due to the team’s inconsistent results. There has been speculation about his future at Leverkusen, with some suggesting he is working “on probation” until the summer. However, he denied this, saying: “I am here and concentrate on my task to help the team. That is my job.”

Hjulmand downplayed the idea of the game being a “rescue” for the season, but he made it clear how important the cup is. “The final is our big goal. It is for me one of the biggest games in Europe. It is our chance to create something special with a title.”
