Real Madrid will be without star forward Kylian Mbappé for Wednesday’s Champions League showdown against Manchester City.
The European heavyweights will meet in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie at the Estadio Bernabéu in Madrid.
Mbappe’s Injury Woes
Mbappé is not expected to be available as he continues to deal with a persistent left knee sprain that he first suffered in December.
The France superstar missed three games in early January due to the injury, and was then forced to the sideline once again late last month. He has now missed the last three matches for Madrid.
Arbeloa’s Update on Mbappe’s Condition
Speaking ahead of the match, Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa said Mbappé is making positive strides as he nears a return.
“He’s better. Obviously, we have to take it one day at a time and see how he is evolving,” Arbeloa explained on Tuesday at his pre-game press conference.
“But this week has been positive. He’s back giving a good feeling, and we are looking forward to having him back soon.”
Potential Return in the Second Leg
Arbeloa’s comments seem to have increased the chances that Mbappé could be ready to return for the second leg, which is set for the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on Tuesday, March 17.
Mbappé’s availability could well make the difference in the tie. The 27-year-old has been in amazing form this season, scoring 38 goals in 33 games.
