King Rasko Grey Wins Tense Turners Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham

King Rasko Grey won the Turners Novices’ Hurdle in a crowded finish.

Drama Before the Start

The Turners Novices’ Hurdle was delayed by a false start. There was also plenty of jostling.

One horse took the opportunity to relieve themself before the race began. Eventually, they were gathered for a standing start.

Jockey Declan Queally said he was verbally abused by “an English rider” during the lead-up to the standing start. Nico de Boinville responded to Queally’s complaints by saying: “Maybe he should look in the mirror”.

The Race Unfolds

Skyline Hustle and I’ll Sort That were the leading pair early on. With five to go, No Drama This End was in a spot of bother at the back. King Rasko Grey and Sober were both well placed.

Act of Innocence joined the leaders approaching the final hurdle. Bossman Jack was gaining ground.

Townend’s Triumph

King Rasko Grey held on to win. Act of Innocence came in second and Zeus Power third. Soldier Reeves finished fourth.

Paul Townend secured an eighth Turners win for Willie Mullins. It was also his 40th win at the festival. Townend said: “I love this horse, he’s still a little babyish but they’ve brought him on a lot, he can be great. Hopefully he can replicate half of what Galopin [Des Champs] has done.”

Turners Novices’ Chase Result:

  • 1st: King Rasko Grey 11-1
  • 2nd: Act of Innocence 10-1
  • 3rd: Zeus Power 50-1
  • 4th: Soldier Reeves 150-1

Looking ahead, the Grand Annual is an annual, high-octane charge over the minimum trip.
