Keldon Johnson emerged as a significant player for San Antonio in Game 1 against the Timberwolves. The newly minted Sixth Man of the Year contributed 11 points, shooting 5/10 from the field, along with two rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes of play. His contributions on both offence and defence are something the Spurs need more of as they face Minnesota.
Johnson’s Offensive Impact
The Timberwolves, spearheaded by Rudy Gobert, present a formidable interior defence. They limited San Antonio’s opportunities for easy baskets inside during Game 1. Johnson, however, displayed a willingness to challenge Minnesota’s defensive wall, aggressively driving to the basket and converting five of his eight two-point attempts.
Johnson proved particularly effective in transition, with four of his five field goals originating from fast breaks. He fearlessly attacked bigger defenders, leveraging his strength and momentum to convert layups. His approach highlighted a potential strategy for the Spurs to generate more easy scoring opportunities moving forward.
San Antonio struggled from beyond the arc in Game 1, making just 27.8% of their 36 three-point attempts. The Spurs must prioritise interior scoring, and Johnson’s fast-break approach can help them do so.
Defensive Matchup Against Randle
Minnesota’s size advantage creates challenging individual matchups for the Spurs. Julius Randle caused problems for San Antonio in Game 1, exploiting smaller defenders such as Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle to get to his preferred spots. Although Randle didn’t have his most efficient shooting night, going 8/20 from the field, he consistently found the shots he wanted.
If San Antonio opts not to assign Victor Wembanyama to defend Randle, Keldon Johnson could be a viable alternative. Johnson’s size allows him to absorb Randle’s physicality and prevent him from establishing deeper position more effectively than Vassell and Castle. He guarded Randle at times during Game 1, and that could be explored further.
Johnson’s Strengths Needed for Victory
Johnson isn’t the most consistent player, and his streaky three-point shooting and below-average athleticism can present limitations in certain matchups. In this series against Minnesota, San Antonio will need his strengths if they’re going to walk out with a victory.
To give themselves a better chance at piling up paint points, San Antonio needs to push the pace and sprint out in transition as much as possible in Game 2.
