Kalvin Phillips is reportedly keen to complete a permanent switch to Sheffield United this summer. This comes as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract with Manchester City.
Phillips’ Difficult City Spell and Yorkshire Return
Phillips, formerly of Leeds United, initially joined Manchester City in a reported £45 million move in the summer of 2022. However, the ex-England international has found himself out of favour under Pep Guardiola. He has made just 16 league appearances, and has thrice departed the Etihad Stadium on loan.
Phillips returned to Yorkshire and the Championship on loan to Sheffield United after his time with Manchester City. The midfielder’s arrival was considered eye-catching at the time.
Phillips made three appearances for the South Yorkshire outfit before being dismissed in February’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. He also suffered a knee injury in that match, which has kept him sidelined since.
Blades Eye Permanent Deal
Phillips has reportedly embraced a new lease of life back in South Yorkshire, and is keen to move permanently once the summer rolls around. The report details that Phillips is eager to complete a permanent switch to Sheffield United this summer.
Sheffield United are reportedly set to explore a full-time move for the Man City player. Wilder has been an outspoken fan of Phillips.
Sheffield United’s Season
Sheffield United are undertaking a summer squad rebuilding process, after underperforming throughout the 2025/26 Championship campaign. This followed a play-off final defeat to Sunderland in May of last year.
Chris Wilder returned to replace Ruben Selles after a disastrous start to the season. United’s current winless streak stretches to six matches, with Wilder’s side sitting in 17th position.
Wilder sanctioned the premature terminations of multiple loan deals and made four additions during the January window. He also tied both Patrick Bamford and Jairo Riedewald down to longer-term contracts.
Phillips is set to return to action before the season’s conclusion. At this stage, it would be reasonable to say that there’s a good chance of Sheffield United finding themselves capable of making Phillips’ stay at Bramall.
