Justin Fields’ time with the New York Jets may be coming to an end after just one season. The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract last offseason, hoping he could become a star quarterback. However, after the Jets traded for Geno Smith, Fields’ future with the team is now in question.
Fields’ Performance and Uncertain Status
Fields, the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, led the Jets to a 2-7 record. He was eventually replaced by Tyrod Taylor. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Fields’ “status is very much up in the air” with the Jets.
The expectation was that the Jets might move on from Fields this offseason. Some are surprised that the Jets haven’t already moved on from the five-year pro.
Quarterback Roster Considerations
The only other quarterbacks on the Jets’ roster are Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe. Cook is an undrafted rookie signing from 2025. If the Jets move on from Fields, they will likely need to find one or two more quarterbacks to replace him.
Potential Future Role
If the Jets move on from Fields this offseason, he won’t get another chance to compete for the starting job. However, he might find a role as a situational player, utilising his running ability on gadget plays.
The New York Jets haven’t always made the best decisions. The team ‘earned’ the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
