The Mets are facing concerns about Juan Soto after he suffered a right calf injury during their 10-3 victory over the Giants. The incident occurred in the first inning, prompting an MRI to be scheduled. This news comes despite the Mets ending a three-game losing streak.
Soto’s Early Exit and MRI Plans
Soto sustained the injury while running from first to third on Bo Bichette’s single. After being forced out at home, manager Carlos Mendoza decided to remove Soto from the game. Tyrone Taylor replaced him in left field at the bottom of the first inning.
Mendoza acknowledged the concerns surrounding Soto’s injury. He stated that calf injuries can be tricky, and the team must await the MRI results scheduled for Saturday morning. Soto had left Oracle Park before reporters entered the postgame clubhouse.
A previous left calf injury forced Soto out of a 2022 game with Washington, but he started the next game.
Mets’ Offensive Outburst Against Giants
Despite the concern over Soto, the Mets had a strong offensive showing against the Giants. They scored five runs in four innings against Tyler Mahle and continued to add runs against the Giants’ bullpen.
Marcus Semien and Francisco Alvarez were key contributors. Semien delivered a two-out hit with runners in scoring position in the first inning and hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Alvarez hit two home runs.
McLean’s Strong Start on the Mound
Nolan McLean started strongly for the Mets, carrying a perfect game into the sixth inning. His perfect game ended with a leadoff walk to Harrison Bader. Willy Adames then hit an RBI double, which was the only hit McLean allowed in 5 1/3 innings.
Team’s Reaction and Alvarez’s Confidence
Marcus Semien acknowledged the potential impact of playing without Soto. He said that he does not know how bad the injury is yet, but that Soto works extremely hard and will get himself back as soon as possible.
Francisco Alvarez believes the Mets can still win even without Soto. He recognised Soto’s importance to the lineup but expressed confidence in other players stepping up.
Alvarez said that it’s unfortunate Soto hurt his calf, and it’s tough to play without him, but he thinks if guys step up they can be OK.
Nobody in the clubhouse wanted to speculate on having to play without Soto, who is considered one of the game’s best all-around players.
