The New York Knicks’ acquisition of Jose Alvarado via a midseason trade was envisioned as a heart-warming narrative. The point guard from Brooklyn, who went undrafted and found a place with the New Orleans Pelicans, seemed poised for a title run with his hometown Knicks.
However, following a promising start, Alvarado has found it difficult to influence crucial games during limited playing time.
He didn’t feature in the Knicks’ wins against the Hawks or Celtics last week.
According to head coach Mike Brown, Alvarado is not currently among the team’s primary nine players expected to form New York’s playoff rotation.
Trade Expectations Versus Reality
The Knicks traded two second-round picks and Guerschon Yabusele for the 6-foot guard. The current situation is not what was anticipated.
However, Alvarado’s story as a Knick may not be over.
Alvarado’s absence from the playoff rotation does not necessarily mean he cannot contribute to winning in a Knicks jersey.
Team captain Jalen Brunson previously described Alvarado’s energy as a skill. Alvarado himself affirmed he had taken his energy for granted for several years at the NBA level.
Opportunity Could Arise in Playoffs
Injuries can occur during intense playoff games. Alvarado might be called upon, and he will need to be ready to contribute to winning basketball.
Jordan Clarkson’s Impact
Part of the reason the Knicks are comfortable benching Alvarado is Jordan Clarkson.
Clarkson’s resurgence has seen him reinvent his game. He is defending all 94 feet on the court and has moved away from attempting 3-point shots.
Clarkson now focuses on driving into the paint, scoring if possible, and passing to open teammates if the rim is well-protected. While his offensive inconsistency previously made it difficult for Brown to overlook his defensive issues, he has evolved into a different player.
While nobody with or surrounding the Knicks is rooting for any sort of injury to occur, Alvarado might be thrust into the action, and he’ll need to be ready to help New York play winning basketball as soon as he enters.
