Joey Wiemer has made a stunning start to the MLB season with the Washington Nationals, reaching base in his first eight plate appearances. Wiemer’s performance has placed him among a select few players in modern MLB history. He secured a spot on the Nationals’ roster after a strong spring training, despite facing competition from several highly-regarded prospects.
Wiemer’s Explosive Start at Wrigley Field
In the opening series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Joey Wiemer showcased his potential. On Sunday, he had a first-inning homer, third-inning triple, sixth-inning walk and eighth-inning single. Wiemer’s contributions helped the Nationals secure a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs, winning the series.
Through one series, Wiemer is hitting 1.000 with a 1.000 OBP and a 3.333 OPS. He has two homers, one triple, three singles, and two walks.
- According to Elias Sports, he joined Steve Henderson and Jeremy Hazelbaker as the third player since 1961 to reach in each of his first eight plate appearances.
From Waiver Claim to MVP Candidate
Wiemer’s journey to success has been far from straightforward. He was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants this winter and has been designated for assignment three times in the last seven months. Now, after one series, some are calling him the National League MVP frontrunner.
“It means a lot,” Wiemer said. “I put in a lot of work. It’s been a windy road. So head down, and keep going.”
Catcher Keibert Ruiz, who also homered in Washington’s win, said, “He’s the MVP.”
Overcoming Roster Competition
Wiemer’s path to the Nationals’ roster was not guaranteed. The team had several emerging stars and highly-rated prospects vying for spots. He beat out Dylan Crews, Robert Hassell and Christian Franklin for the final spot.
Wiemer’s performance earned him a place in the Opening Day lineup. He also demonstrated his ability to contribute late in games, crushing a walk-off homer to end spring training in West Palm Beach.
The Nationals claimed Wiemer off waivers from the San Francisco Giants this winter. He has lifted the Nationals to their first season-opening series win since 2018.
