Jared McCain is making a splash with the Oklahoma City Thunder, bringing what one teammate called ‘contagious energy’. The guard, acquired in a midseason trade from Philadelphia, has quickly found his place with the defending NBA champions.
McCain’s On-Court Impact
McCain scored 12 points in a 122-113 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, during Game 2 of the Western Conference finals. He also contributed six rebounds and three assists. McCain played more than seven fourth-quarter minutes, closing out the game on the court for the Thunder.
In 40 games with Oklahoma City, McCain has averaged 10.8 points off the bench in the Thunder’s six games since the start of the second round. He also nailed a trio of 3-pointers on Wednesday.
‘Contagious Energy’ Boosts Thunder
Alex Caruso spoke to the media after the game, noting McCain’s positive impact on the team. Caruso said McCain has been enlightening for the team from a personality standpoint. He added that McCain has endless energy every single day and he’s always smiling, joking, being a part of the team and being a great teammate.
Caruso said that McCain is constantly moving on offense, which is manipulating the defence. He’s starting to pick up some of their other principles. Caruso also mentioned that McCain is learning and his energy is contagious any time he is on the court, adding that everybody playing with him can feel it.
Embracing Individuality
McCain is known for his unapologetic Generation Z persona. He sports multicolored painted nails with creative designs. McCain also has a large following on social media, including more than 5 million followers on TikTok, 2 million followers on Instagram, and 375,000 YouTube subscribers.
McCain addressed the criticism he receives for his personal expression. He said that he definitely got hate for the painting of the nails, and the TikTok dances. He added that it wasn’t an in-your-face kind of thing because he started it during COVID. McCain said it’s something he likes doing, but basketball has always been the main thing, and people try to deteriorate that and make it about other things.
McCain said he’s always been comfortable doing it and comfortable in his own skin. He credits his parents and his family for providing him that confidence.
From Draft Pick to Key Contributor
McCain was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 16th pick in the 2024 NBA draft. The former Duke guard had a fast start to his career, averaging 15.3 points. This performance established him as the early favourite for the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year award.
McCain’s journey has taken him from a promising start in Philadelphia to a key role with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
