James Rodriguez: Limited Game Time at Minnesota United

James Rodríguez’s time with Minnesota United may be limited. According to coach Cameron Knowles, it will be difficult to give Rodríguez playing time. The team’s performance without him is a key reason.

Few Opportunities for Rodríguez

Rodríguez has started only twice since joining Minnesota United in February. Once in the local league and once in the national cup. He has played just 183 minutes.

Knowles addressed the limited playing time in an interview. He pointed to the team’s results. Minnesota United are fifth in the Western Conference with 20 points from a possible 33.

Team Success Limits Changes

Knowles explained that the team’s performance makes it hard to change the lineup. He said, “It’s difficult to change a winning team and we’ve been very consistent with the selection of the line-up and we’ve been leaning on a smaller group of guys for a lot of minutes, but week after week, they keep delivering.”

Minnesota United have won five of their last six MLS matches. They lost the one match in which James Rodríguez started. He has only played one minute in the other five matches.

Knowles highlighted the players who have stepped up. He mentioned Triantis, Chancalay, Pereyra and Owen Gene. He added, “We’ve had some guys who have stepped up and really earned their positions and have kept playing and keep doing the job.”

Colombia Call-Up Looms

The pre-squad for the Colombia national team for the 2026 World Cup will be announced on 11 May. The training camp starts that Friday, 15 May. Rodríguez may not finish the season with Minnesota.
