James Rew Century Puts Somerset in Control Against Nottinghamshire

James Rew’s unbeaten century, coupled with Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s 94*, has put Somerset in a commanding position against Nottinghamshire in their County Championship Division One match at Taunton.

An unbroken second-wicket stand of 207 between Rew and Kohler-Cadmore on day three saw the hosts reach 214-1 by the close, extending their lead to 223 after gaining a slender first innings lead of nine runs.

Rew and Kohler-Cadmore Dominate

Rew’s innings saw him reach 108 not out from 157 balls, including 13 fours. Kohler-Cadmore also hit 13 boundaries in his unbeaten 94 from 153 deliveries.

James Rew has scored 12 first-class centuries.

Ogborne’s Burst Changes the Game

A significant moment occurred in the Notts first innings when Alfie Ogborne, Somerset’s young left-arm seamer, claimed three wickets in as many overs with the second new ball. This reduced the visitors from 268-4 to 284-7.

Nottinghamshire were eventually bowled out for 338, in reply to Somerset’s 347.

Joe Clarke top-scored for Notts with 92.

Early Setbacks and Missed Chances

The morning session was interrupted twice by rain, resulting in a loss of eight overs from the scheduled 101. Somerset took just five balls to break the Notts fourth-wicket stand of 92 between Clarke and Jack Haynes, with Haynes caught behind for 55 off Craig Overton.

After the first rain break, Kyle Verreynne was dropped on three by Kohler-Cadmore at first slip off Pretorius. Despite this, Notts appeared well-placed, trailing by only 80 runs with six wickets in hand before Ogborne’s intervention.

Ogborne’s New Ball Magic

Ogborne’s fine spell, bowling over the wicket from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End, shifted the momentum. His second over with the new ball saw him dismiss Verreynne lbw for 25 with a delivery that swung in. Three balls later, a similar delivery bowled Clarke, who had struck 12 fours in his innings, leaving Notts at 269-6.

At lunch, Notts were 274-6 following more rain. Ogborne continued after the resumption, inducing Lyndon James to edge behind.

Ogborne could have had another wicket, but Overton dropped Liam Patterson-White at slip on 12. However, Patterson-White was eventually caught behind off Pretorius for 17.

Jake Ball wrapped up the innings by having Rob Lord caught by wicketkeeper Rew for 22 and last man Dillon Pennington caught by Kohler-Cadmore at first slip. Both sides claimed five bonus points.

Somerset will be looking to press their advantage on the final day, while Nottinghamshire face a battle to salvage a draw.
