James Milner Reflects on Career Achievements and Future

James Milner, who plays for Brighton, recently surpassed Gareth Barry’s record for the most Premier League appearances, reaching a total of 656. He reflects on his career in ‘The Football Interview’ with Kelly Somers, broadcast on BBC One.

Milner on Breaking the Premier League Appearance Record

Milner made his debut for Leeds in November 2002 and holds the distinction of being both the Premier League’s youngest and oldest goalscorer. He has played for big clubs, winning three Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups, and one League Cup during his time at Manchester City and Liverpool.

When asked about breaking the Premier League appearance record, Milner acknowledged the attention surrounding the achievement. “It is obviously a nice thing in terms of people acknowledging that it’s a big number. It’s a lot of games,” he said, but added that his focus has been on his job for Brighton.

Overcoming Injury Setbacks

Milner revealed that one of his biggest achievements was returning to the pitch this season after a nine-month absence due to a knee operation. The injury had left him unable to lift his foot.

Young Milner’s Aspirations

Somers asked what a young James Milner would have thought of his career achievements. Milner responded that his focus was initially on breaking into the first team and then continually striving for the next achievement, never resting. He added that he “definitely wouldn’t be thinking too far ahead – never mind 20-odd years ahead and thinking I’d still be playing.”

According to Milner, it is important to never rest on your laurels and always look for the next achievement.
