Jakub Mensik has reached the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros after a dramatic five-set match. The 20-year-old secured his place after a three hours and 45 minutes battle. Mensik’s victory puts him in the last eight at a major for the first time in his career.
Mensik’s Dramatic Victory Over Rublev
Mensik defeated Andrey Rublev in a thrilling encounter. Mensik won the match 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3. The final game was full of drama. Mensik saved two break points before securing the win.
Rublev fought back from two sets down. He won the third set 6-4 and the fourth 6-2. This forced a deciding fifth set.
The match between Rublev and Mensik took place on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The match time went past 10.30pm. Rublev had ongoing exchanges with the chair umpire.
Fonseca’s Run and Mensik’s Next Opponent
Joao Fonseca is one set away from a first major quarterfinal. He squeezed through an 81-minute set 10-8 in a tiebreak. The Brazilian converted his fourth set point, saving three along the way. Those two sets have taken 2 hours and 19 minutes.
Mensik will play either Casper Ruud or Joao Fonseca on Tuesday.
Junior Tournament Update
The junior draws have commenced. The top seed on the girls’ side has already been upset. The boys’ singles tournament at Roland-Garros dates back to 1947. The first girls’ event took place in 1953.
Former champions include Ivan Lendl, Jennifer Capriati, Fabrice Santoro, Martina Hingis, Stan Wawrinka, Justin Henin, Gael Monfils and Coco Gauff.
Top-seeded Ksenia Efremova, who won the girls’ singles title at the 2026 Australian Open, was upset by Ekaterina Dotsenko, 6-3, 6-3. Last week WTA No.623-ranked Efremova played the women’s main draw in Paris, losing to Sorana Cirstea, 6-3, 6-1.
- The top seed on the boys’ side is Brazil’s Guto Miguel.
- Miguel will open his bid to become the first Brazilian to win a Roland-Garros junior title on Monday against Japan’s Hyu Kawanishi.
- Miguel is one of three players from Brazil to be seeded inside the top 5.
The other two are No.4 seed Victoria Luiza Barros and No.5 seed Nauhany Vitoria Leme Da Silva in the girls’ draw.
