Jack Colback has announced his retirement from professional football. The former Newcastle United and Sunderland midfielder made the announcement recently.
From Sunderland Academy to the Premier League
Colback was a product of Sunderland’s academy. He made 135 appearances for the Black Cats. He was also part of their side who reached the Carabao Cup final in the 2013/14 season.
That summer, he left Sunderland on a free transfer. He then made the controversial decision to join his boyhood club and their fierce rivals, Newcastle.
Time at Newcastle United
Colback made 102 appearances for the Magpies. In his first season at St James’ Park he earned an England call-up. He was also part of the side that lifted the Championship title in 2017 under Rafa Benitez.
Later Career and Reflection
Colback spent 18 months on loan at Nottingham Forest. He later joined them on a free transfer when he left Newcastle in 2020. In the summer of 2023, his career took him to QPR, where he spent two seasons in West London.
After being released on a free transfer, he most recently turned out for Northern Premier League Midlands division side Anstey Nomads before taking the decision to call time on his playing career.
In a statement confirming his decision, Colback said: “Today I’m announcing my retirement from professional football.”
“I feel privileged to have the honour of playing nearly 500 matches at the top level, representing some of the biggest clubs in the country in Newcastle, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and Queen’s Park Rangers.”
“From pulling on the shirt for the first time as a young lad to stepping out in front of packed stadiums in the Premier League, it’s been a journey I’ll always be grateful for.
“There have been highs, lows, promotions, tough defeats, and moments I’ll never forget. I would like to thank all of my coaches, teammates and supporters who helped me to achieve my dream. Looking forward to what the next chapter holds.”
