IPL Playoffs Format: Qualifiers and Eliminator Explained

The playoffs signify the business end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. After all matches in the league phase, the top four teams in the points table advance to the playoffs to determine the champion.

Unlike the semi-final format, the IPL playoffs give teams finishing first or second two chances to reach the final. Teams placed third and fourth will compete in knock-out matches.

How Teams Qualify for the Playoffs

The four teams with the highest position in the table after the league phase enter the IPL playoffs. Teams are ranked by points, with net run rate (NRR) used as a tie-breaker.

The Qualifiers and Eliminator Format

The playoffs structure consists of four matches.

  • Qualifier 1 is played between the teams in the top two positions. The winner automatically qualifies for the IPL final.
  • The loser of Qualifier 1 gets another chance to qualify for the IPL final by playing another Qualifier game.
  • The Eliminator is between the teams who finish the league stage in third and fourth positions. The loser is out of the competition, and the winner goes on to play Qualifier 2.
  • Qualifier 2 is the penultimate step before the final, featuring the defeated team of Qualifier 1 and the winning team of the Eliminator. The winners of Qualifier 2 move on to the final match, while the defeated team is eliminated.

Advantages of a Top-Two Finish

This system favours teams that perform well during the league stage. Finishing first or second gives teams another chance to qualify for the finals even if they lose one match during the playoffs.

The system was introduced in 2011 and is still in use.
