Inter Milan Aim to Extend Serie A Lead Against Fiorentina

Inter Milan, leading Serie A, are preparing to face Fiorentina. They aim to strengthen their Scudetto bid during their visit on Sunday.

Despite recent results, Inter remain favourites to win the Italian title.

Inter’s Recent Form and Title Pursuit

Despite losing the Derby della Madonnina recently, Inter have maintained a lead over AC Milan in the Serie A standings. However, Cristian Chivu may be concerned about his team’s loss of momentum since their victory against Juventus in the Derby d’Italia.

Following back-to-back defeats against Bodo/Glimt which resulted in them crashing out of the Champions League, Inter beat Genoa then lost to Milan. They were then held to a draw by Atalanta last weekend.

After their 1-1 draw against Lombardy rivals Atalanta, Inter could go three league games without a win for the first time in a single season since April 2023.

Inter are still competing for a domestic double, with their Coppa Italia semi-final tie against Como scheduled for next month.

Fiorentina’s Fight for Serie A Survival

Before the international break, Inter will face Fiorentina, an opponent against whom they have a strong record, winning 10 and losing just two of their last 17 league games. Fiorentina did win the most recent meeting at Stadio Franchi 3-0, having failed to win in any of the previous seven.

Fiorentina are coming off a midweek victory in their 50th Conference League fixture, the most of any team since the competition’s inception, as they reached this year’s quarter-finals. Having led 2-1 from the home leg, Paolo Vanoli’s side repeated that result on Thursday evening, knocking out Rakow Czestochowa to book a last-eight clash with Crystal Palace.

Substitute defender Marin Pongracic scored from his own half in that game.

While enjoying a run in the Conference League, Fiorentina are also facing a fight for Serie A survival.

Their 4-1 victory over Cremonese on Monday moved them four points clear of the drop zone. Dodo ended his long goal drought, and Albert Gudmundsson scored after a slick team move.

Fiorentina have accumulated 19 points from 12 matches this calendar year, which would place them seventh in the 2026 table. They have lost just one of their last seven home games.
